2010 brought near average rain fall amounts with a few late Spring rains delaying the start of ripening. The Spring and Summer temperatures stayed mild with only one heat spike coming in late August which help advance the ripening and the start of harvest about one week later than normal. The reds are deeply colored and elegantly structured, with abundant dark cassis fruit, fine-grained tannins and a supple mouthfeel. Our vineyards on Mount Veeder received a little push from Mother Nature during the last week of September in the form of a warm days and warm nights. Cabernet Franc from our Mount Veeder Vineyards was harvested on November 3rd.
Mount Veeder Winery was one of the first producers of Cabernet Franc, and was the first vineyard in California to plant all five Bordeaux varietals. This is a truly noble grape variety, as the father of Cabernet Sauvignon, with its own personality and characteristics that reach terrific expression on the mountain.
Cabernet Franc offers a complex array of characters –plums, cherries, peppercorn, violets, olive, and tobacco, and gives quintessential Bordeaux expression. I love its power with refinement, richness with elegance. The high elevation and steep hillsides of our vineyards create small berries of intense concentration. We have only a small amount of Cabernet Franc planted, so it’s a treat to be able to create a limited production bottling of this special variety.
